What is lumbar support, and why do we need it?

We all know that comfort is key when sitting for long periods of time, whether that is in the workplace, in school or at conferences and events - nobody wants to experience those aches and pains that lead to distraction and lack of focus.

Here at Spaceforme, we worry about creating the best ergonomic solutions so that you don't have to - one of the most effective ergonomic solutions is lumbar support - but what does this mean? Keep reading to find out more.

What is lumbar support?

The lumbar region is situated in the lower back, just above the coccyx and the sacrum. In layman's terms, it is simply your lower back. When sitting on unsupportive furniture or in the incorrect seating position, you are putting your lumbar under pressure, leading to back pain.

Why is it important?

When students are seated on chairs that do not provide adequate lumbar support, they are more likely to sit in a hunched position, rounding their shoulders, crunching their lower backs and holding their head forward. This can lead to many strains on the body, including headaches, back and neck pain and abdominal strain.

What does it look like?

Lumbar support can show in different ways across different styles of chairs, from office to classroom and soft seating to plastic chairs. Our en classic shell boasts incredible lumbar support in the curved shape of the backrest. The innovative S shape creates an ideal position for your back, allowing the lumbar position to be supported and reducing strain. The shell allows for some flex, meaning that users can slightly lean back to adjust posture and stretch the spine.

Why choose the en classic?

FIRA has recognised the en classic shell as going 'beyond the standard BSEN1729' and highlights the chairs design led aesthetics whilst maintaining great value for money. The en classic shell can be paired with a wide variety of base options, from high seating to floor chairs and everything in between. Check out some options below.
