Encouraging reading through classroom design: tips & trends

In honour of World Book Day it may be time to consider how you can encourage students to get lost in a book by creating an enticing environment for them to get comfortable in.


Reading corners are popular in classrooms around the world, but what makes a good one?


Size:

The area needs to be 'just right' think of Goldilocks and the Three Bears - too big and it wont feel cosy, too small and children will not be able to sit or lie down comfortably. When the space is just right the students will have the freedom to adjust positions, get comfortable and immerse themselves in the words on the page.


Consider a theme:

Theming the corner will help to spark students' imagination, consider choosing a topic that students are currently learning about, or are about to discover in their lessons to build excitement for new environments.


Popular themes include:

  • Nature

  • Scenes from popular books

  • Outer space

  • Cosy cottage


Getting comfy:

Between the hustle and bustle of readjusting classrooms to morph into art studios, laboratories, exam rooms and group work settings it is important that the reading area remains comfortable and cosy.


Similar to getting comfortable at home soft, cosy decor is key! Use cushions, blankets, thick rugs and beanbags to encourage students to create their own areas of comfort.


Good posture is still key, with children's bodies developing so crucially at this stage of life it is important to ensure good habits and healthy posture - helping to prevent injury in later life.
